service

I offer one-to-one midwifery care to women through their pregnancy, birth and postnatally. One-to-one support has been shown again and again to mean better outcomes for mothers and their babies, and so ultimately for their families too.

initially

Women usually phone for a bit of a chat about what they are looking for. We usually arrange an appointment fairly soon, for which there is a £50 charge (refundable if you choose to book). This would normally take place in your home, and would last about 1-1½ hours. It is a chance for us to get to know one another a little bit, and for you to ask questions and discuss your needs. If you would like to go ahead and book, we will arrange your first antenatal appointment.

antenatally

During the pregnancy visits take place usually in your own home, at times to suit you and your family and according to your needs at that particular stage of pregnancy. Visits usually last about an hour, so there is plenty of time to discuss both immediate concerns and plans for birth and afterwards. I can arrange blood tests and ultrasound scans for you as required. You remain entitled to NHS care when booked with an independent midwife, and I will refer you to a relevant medical practitioner of your choice, should problems arise.

labour and birth

From 37 weeks, I will be on 24-hour call for you. With good antenatal preparation, you will know when you feel you want me to attend. I will attend you in labour, and remain with you until you and your baby are settled. I work with the support of other experienced midwives locally, who will provide back-up if necessary.

postnatally

After your baby's arrival, I will visit as often as required, usually daily at first, gradually spacing the visits out as you require less support and feeding is well established. The final visit is usually at around 6 weeks postnatally, when I will give you a copy of all your notes if you would like to keep them.
